Anterior flap external dacryocystorhinostomy without silicone intubation had a close to 100% success rate in children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction, a study found.
Rajat Maheshwari, of Shri Ganapati Netralaya in Jalna, India, reviewed the records of 44 children who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) at the mean age of 8.7 years. In all cases, only the anterior flaps of the lacrimal sac and nasal mucosa were sutured. No patients received lacrimal intubation.
At 12 months' mean follow-up, 37 children (97.5%) achieved success, defined as patent postoperative lacrimal irrigation without fluid regurgitation when applying pressure over the sac area, and relief of symptoms. No patients experienced postoperative complications, according to Dr. Maheshwari.
The study is published in the December issue of the Asian Journal of Ophthalmology.
