AMO sales up almost 25% in 2005
SANTA ANA, Calif. — Advanced Medical Optics reported net sales for 2005 of $920.7 million, a 24% increase over 2004 levels. The company attributed the gain primarily to its acquisition of VISX, which was completed in May.
Overall, AMO reported a net loss of $453 million in 2005, compared with a net loss of $129 million in 2004. AMO attributed the losses to charges related to acquisitions and recapitalizations, the company said in a press release.
For the year, total cataract/implant sales rose 23% to $496 million. Total IOL sales grew 10% to $259 million during 2004, mainly because of increased sales of Tecnis and the accelerated phase out of older-generation silicone and PMMA IOLs, according to the company. The Tecnis Multifocal, ReZoom and Verisyse lenses accounted for $22.9 million in sales.
Sales of AMO’s viscoelastics grew 77% during 2005, reaching $131 million; AMO attributed the growth to the integration of the Healon (sodium hyaluronate) line of viscoelastics.
Phacoemulsification sales rose 7.5% in 2005 to $81 million, and the company noted “strong sales” of its Sovereign phacoemulsifier with WhiteStar technology.
Laser vision correction sales totaled $123 million in 2005, with system sales accounting for $27 million. The increase in sales was also attributed to the VISX acquisition.
Eye care sales declined 8.5%, to $301 million in 2004. AMO blamed soft performance in Japan and its acceleratied rationalization of non-strategic products for the decline.
