CHICAGO — American politics and discourse should reflect our uniqueness and triumphs, rather than our battles and internal division, said journalist and former White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, here.

"What's going on is bad for the country. Period," said Mr. Snow in his address during the Government Relations Session at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting. He specifically said the government too often underestimates the American public, as well as the importance of global awareness in the arena of technology.

"There's a global explosion going on and our job is to get on top of it, to build a sense of optimism and creativity," said Mr. Snow.

"This is the country people come to if they want to make their dreams come true or even if they want the freedom to have the dream," he said.

Mr. Snow served as White House Press Secretary for President George W. Bush from May 2006 to September 2007. He also served as director of speechwriting and deputy assistant to the president for media affairs for President George H.W. Bush in 1991, according to an ASCRS press release.

Prior to that, he worked for 25 years in print, television and radio journalism, the release said.
