ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American National Standards Institute Z80 Accredited Standards Committee for Ophthalmic Optics has unveiled a new standard for toric monofocal IOLs used for correcting aphakia or refractive power modifications in phakic eyes, the committee announced in a press release.

The guidelines, called ANSI Z80.30, address the terminology, visual and mechanical properties, testing protocol and classification of monofocal IOLs. In addition, the guidelines tackle the biocompatibility, sterility, shelf-life, transport stability and clinical development — including testing protocol and requirements — for monofocal astigmatism-correcting IOLs in aphakic eyes.

"After the crystalline lens of the eye has been removed, toric lens implants can modify the residual refractive state in such an eye in order to reduce preoperatively or intraoperatively measured astigmatic refractive error that generally arises from the cornea," Carl Tubbs, MD, chair of the American National Standards Institute Z80 (ANSI Z80) subcommittee on medical ophthalmic devices, said in the release. "This standard will help to ensure that patients receive the best IOLs possible."

The ANSI Z80.30 standard for toric IOLs is available for purchase at the ANSI Web store.
