Automated lamellar therapeutic keratoplasty improved visual acuity in eyes with anterior- to mid-stromal corneal pathologies, according to a recent report.

Rasik B. Vajpayee, MS, FRCSEd, and colleagues at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi evaluated the lamellar corneal procedure in 15 eyes of 15 patients using the ALTK System from Moria.

Surgeries lasted an average of 46 minutes. Median time to epithelialization was 3 days.

At 6 months' follow-up, mean best corrected visual acuity improved from 0.08 preoperatively to 0.33. Contrast sensitivity and glare acuity also improved significantly, according to the study authors.

The study is published in the December issue of Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica.
