IRVINE, Calif. — Allergan launched an over-the-counter lubricant eye drop for treating dry eye syndrome, the company announced in a press release.

Optive (carboxymethylcellulose sodium 0.5%, glycerin 0.9%) is available in a multi-use bottle preserved with Purite, a dissolvable preservative with no known cytotoxic, allergenic or irritating effects. The drops are formulated to provide both lubrication to the tear film and penetration below the surface of the eye for osmoprotection against hypertonic stress, a company official said in the release.

Dry eye patients who used Optive in a 3-month trial demonstrated statistically significant improvement in six common signs and symptoms of dry eye with little blurring of vision, according to the release.
