Allergan announces Horizon Grant recipients for clinical research in ophthalmology

IRVINE, Calif. — Allergan announced recipients of Horizon Grants, which are awarded annually to support clinical research in the diagnosis or treatment of glaucoma, corneal and retinal diseases. Each grant is $50,000.

"Allergan is proud to present the Horizon Grants to this group of eye care professionals who are committed to advancing the field of eye care," Steven James, MD, Allergan vice president for medical affairs, said in a press release. "Allergan recognizes the important role fellows play in contributing to research and development in ophthalmology."

Cornea research grants were awarded to Ricardo Santaella, MD, and Natalie Afshari, MD, MA, of Duke University Eye Center; and Anita Gupta, MD, and Eduardo Alfonso, MD, of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Glaucoma research grants were awarded to Christopher Shen, MD, and Steven Mansberger, MD, of Devers Eye Institute; and Eric Leung, MD, and Felipe Medeiros, MD, PhD, of University of California, San Diego.

Retina research grants were awarded to Cecelia Sanchez, MD, and Lloyd Paul Aiello, MD, PhD, of Joslin Diabetes Center; and Sara Modjtahedi, MD, and Lawrence Morse, MD, PhD, of University of California, Davis.

The Horizon Academic Advisory Board and Allergan's grant review committee reviewed all grant applications. The advisory board includes Dimitri Azar, MD, Peter J. McDonnell, MD, Ronald E. Smith, MD, David S. Greenfield, MD, Anne L. Coleman, MD, PhD, James C. Tsai, MD, Jayakrishna Ambati, MD, Mark S. Blumenkranz, MD, and George A. Williams, MD.
