Allegretto Wave approved for mixed astigmatism correction

STERLING, Va. — A wavefront-optimized excimer laser has received an additional indication from U.S. regulators to treat mixed astigmatism, according to a press release.

The new indication includes the reduction or elimination of naturally occurring mixed astigmatism of up to 6 D at the spectacle plane, said WaveLight, the laser’s marketer, in the release.

The Allegretto Wave received the additional indication based on study results of 162 eyes treated at six investigational sites throughout the United States, WaveLight said. Three-month follow-up on 142 eyes demonstrated that 68% of eyes achieved 20/20 vision and 95.8% achieved 20/40 vision. Ninety-four percent of eyes were within 0.5 D of targeted correction and 99% were within 1 D of targeted correction. Astigmatic results for 77% of eyes were within 0.5 D of target and 95% of eyes were within 1 D of target, WaveLight said.
