Alcon to introduce AcrySof phakic IOL at ESCRS

HUENENBERG, Switzerland — Alcon plans to announce the international release of its AcrySof phakic lens at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons annual meeting in Berlin, the company announced in a press release.

Designed to correct moderate to high levels of myopia, the AcrySof advanced angle-supported phakic IOL is a foldable lens that will be available in four lengths with refractive powers ranging from –6 D to –16.5 D, the release said.

The lens received a European CE Mark in August based on positive results from a clinical trial that enrolled 360 patients. In the study, the lens significantly improved uncorrected visual acuity to an average of 20/25 or better with minimal central and peripheral endothelial cell loss over 3 years of follow-up.

Studies on the lens are under way in the United States.
