Alcon launches new dry eye drops

FORT WORTH, Texas — Alcon will ship a new artificial tear formulation to retailers this month, according to a company press release. The company’s Systane Lubricant Eye Drops contain a “unique gelling and lubricating polymer system formulated to adjust to the patient’s unique tear film pH,” according to Alcon.

The polymer system (hydroxypropylguar and borate) works with propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol and an ionic balance that mimics the natural properties of tears, a company spokeswoman said.

“In a clinical study, Systane improved clinical signs in just days, as is demonstrated by its impressive 51% reduction in corneal staining from baseline. When compared to the leading artificial tear, Systane delivered superior relief of morning dryness, evening dryness and foreign body sensation,” a press release stated.
