PARIS — Alcon Inc. announced the launch of the Acrysof IQ ReSTOR multifocal toric IOL at a media briefing here.

"This platform is designed to allow surgeons to take advantage of some of the changing dynamics of the cataract surgery market as well as meeting the new demands of patients in terms of the ability to treat astigmatism and presbyopia at the time of cataract surgery," Jay Stark, global product manager for Alcon, said at the media event here during the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

The lens combines the multifocal performance of the AcrySof ReSTOR multifocal IOL and the AcrySof Toric IOL.

Mr. Stark presented data showing 87% of cataract surgery patients have astigmatism and more than a billion people have presbyopia worldwide.

According to Francesco Carones, MD, who presented his 3 month results with the first patient implanted worldwide with the multifocal toric IOL, one of the additional benefits of the technology is that it combines two surgical platforms already familiar to many surgeons.

"Basically the merging of this technology means we don't need to learn anything new," Dr. Carones said. "The IOL provides a single surgical procedure for the correction of presbyopia and astigmatism management to deliver vision at all distances."

He presented his personal case results with his first patient implanted with the lens at 3 months. He said his patient, a 49-year-old architect and interior designer, is not wearing glasses and is extremely pleased with her surgical results.
