STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Alcon introduced the AcrySof ReSTOR aspheric IOL, along with its Monarch D-cartridge IOL injector here, at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

The new lens offers a central apodized region of 3.6 mm, with gradually decreasing step heights of 1.3 µm to 0.2 µm, with +4 D of additional power in the lenticular plane for near vision with 3.2 D at the spectacle plane, according to company materials.

"The ReSTOR aspheric IOL provides a nearly doubled modular transfer function (MTF) of distance image quality in mesopic conditions," Bill Barton, Alcon's senior vice president of U.S. operations and marketing, said in an interview with Ocular Surgery News. "The aspheric lens brings a better overall quality of vision."

The Monarch injection system was designed as an injection system for use in all of the AcrySof IOLs, according to Steve Speares, director of global cataract marketing for Alcon. The IOL and the injector system are designed as part of the overall Infiniti platform.

"The Infiniti drives the whole procedure," Mr. Speares said.

"One thing this system will do is it will allow a broad spectrum of ophthalmologists to implant an IOL through a sub-2.5-mm incision in microincision coaxial phacoemulsification surgery," Mr. Barton said.

With the entire system in place, "patients are talking about visual acuity at day 1 postop, and they are very happy with their vision," Mr. Barton said.
