Alcon introduces AcrySof phakic IOL at ESCRS
BERLIN — Alcon announced the international release of its AcrySof phakic lens at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons annual meeting here.
"We have been working for 9 years to find a new technology for a phakic IOL," Bill Barton, area president for the U.S. and vice president of global marketing, told Ocular Surgery News. "We are extremely pleased by the clinical results achieved in working to attain this approval and by the enthusiastic reception we are receiving from the European ophthalmology community for this new technology."
Designed to correct moderate to high levels of myopia, the AcrySof advanced angle-supported phakic IOL is a foldable lens that will be available in four lengths with refractive powers ranging from –6 D to –16.5 D, the release said.
Based on positive results from a clinical trial that enrolled 360 patients, the lens received a CE Mark in August. In the study, the lens significantly improved uncorrected visual acuity to an average of 20/25 or better with minimal central and peripheral endothelial cell loss over 3 years of follow-up.
Studies on the lens are under way in the United States.
