ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has granted New Technology Intraocular Lens status for Bausch & Lomb's Akreos Advanced Optics Aspheric IOL, the company announced.

The designation took effect April 30, according to a Bausch & Lomb press release.

"We are pleased that CMS recognized the performance of the Akreos AO lens and its impact on improved vision," Brendan Sheil, Bausch & Lomb vice president of Americas Surgical Sales, said in the release.

The Akreos AO earned the NTIOL designation because of its spherical aberration-reducing design. The designation allows Medicare to reimburse ASCs an additional $50 for cataract procedures that involve implantation of the Akreos AO IOL. The current NTIOL subset and adjusted payment for the Akreos AO IOL are scheduled to be in effect until Feb. 26, 2011.

The Akreos AO IOL met or exceeded subset-specific clinical benefits established as the benchmark for NTIOL designation, according to the release.
