Ahmed valve helps control pediatric uveitic glaucoma
Implantation of the Ahmed glaucoma valve can effectively and safely treat pediatric patients with uveitic glaucoma, provided there is good immunomodulatory control of their inflammation, according to a study.
Chrysanthi Kafkala, MD, and colleagues at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary reviewed the results of Ahmed valve implantation for the treatment of refractory uveitic glaucoma in seven eyes of six pediatric patients. IOP reduction, preoperative and postoperative visual acuities, the number of medications and complications from the surgery were evaluated.
Mean follow-up was 37 months. At the final follow-up visit, all seven eyes had IOPs in the range of 9 mm Hg to 18 mm Hg. The average IOP reduction after surgery was 70%. The number of hypotensive agents was reduced from an average of three before surgery to 0.7 after surgery.
The study is published in the August issue of the Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
