IRVINE, Calif. — AcuFocus has launched its KAMRA intracorneal inlay and AcuTarget system in Europe and Asia, the company announced in a press release.

The AcuTarget system, developed in conjunction with computer vision application developer SensoMotoric Instrument, is indicated for aiding the surgical placement of the KAMRA intracorneal inlay, which is designed to create a small aperture effect for the eye to correct presbyopia, the release said.

This follows the presentation in September of positive 3-year data regarding the KAMRA inlay at the European Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, demonstrating the inlay's safety and efficacy for improving vision in presbyopic patients. At 3 years, patients who had been implanted with the inlay reported significant gains in uncorrected near visual acuity and intermediate uncorrected visual acuity. Overall, 97% of patients achieved J3 vision or better with a mean uncorrected near visual acuity of J1. In addition, 91% of patients achieved an uncorrected intermediate visual acuity of 20/32 or better.

"The KAMRA inlay and the AcuTarget system offer eye care professionals a proven, precise and predictable solution for presbyopia, virtually eliminating a patient's need for reading glasses," Mike Judy, chief commercialization officer at AcuFocus, said in the release.

The KAMRA inlay received a European CE mark in 2005 and is currently designated as an investigational device under investigational device exemption in the United States.
