FORT WORTH, Texas — An aspheric IOL has been recognized as belonging to the subset of new technology IOLs that reduce spherical aberration by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The NTIOL designation raises the Medicare reimbursement for the lens by $50, the lens’s marketer said in a press release.

Alcon’s AcrySof IQ has been shown to improve night driving performance when compared with a conventional spherical IOL, the company said. To gain inclusion of the lens in the NTIOL category of lenses that reduce spherical aberration, Alcon had to demonstrate that the AcrySof IQ offered “the same or greater clinical benefit” as the lens that established that NTIOL subset, the company said.

The designation went into effect May 19, and the adjusted payment will remain in effect until Feb. 27, 2011, Alcon said.

Advanced Medical Optics’ Tecnis lenses were granted the same designation in January; the addition payment for those lenses will also expire on Feb. 27, 2011.
