Accommodating lens maintains stable long-term accommodation, study shows

ISTANBUL, Turkey — An accommodating IOL showed long-term subjective and objective accommodation and a low incidence of capsular opacification in two separate studies.

"We prospectively evaluated five eyes implanted with the Synchrony IOL (Abbott Medical Optics) over a period of 4 years," Eduardo Marques, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons here.

Subjective distance corrected near visual acuity and push-down amplitude were measured at yearly intervals. Objective accommodation movements were assessed by ultrasound biomicroscopy at 1 and 4 years, and objective refraction measurements were made using iTrace aberrometry (Tracey Technologies) at 2, 3 and 4 years.

"Patients maintained a stable capability to read at near over the entire follow-up period, and UBM showed forward axial movement of the front optic during accommodation at 1 and 4 years, with similar magnitude movements between the two time points. The iTrace showed a very consistent myopic refractive change during accommodation at all time points," Dr. Marques said.
