CLEVELAND Epithelial thickness modulations post-LASIK can help explain clinically observed regression and aberration induction, researchers here say. Further, as the cornea seems to smooth over ablated features smaller than 0.5 mm, designing ablation patterns that pre-compensate for the smoothing may help improve final outcomes, they suggest.
David Huang, MD, PhD, and colleagues with the Cole Eye Institute retrospectively studied 77 eyes that had undergone LASIK for the correction of myopia and 19 eyes that had undergone LASIK for the correction of hyperopia.
Simulated epithelial modeling matched real ablation changes once a smoothing constant was set.
The study and formula are published in the March issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
