AAO names guests of honor, spotlight sessions and more
SAN FRANCISCO The American Academy of Ophthalmology has named Byron Demorest, MD; William E. Scott, MD; and Reginald J. Stambaugh, MD, as guests of honor for its annual meeting in November.
Special recognition award recipients will also be honored during the meeting, AAO announced in a press release. The special recognition award winners are Edward H. McManus; Dan B. Jones, MD; and Harry S. Brown, MD.
Dr. Demorest is being honored for his dedication to patient care and public education, teaching, administration and the study and treatment of lacrimal diseases. Dr. Scott is being recognized for his clinical, educational and research contributions, especially in the fields of strabismus, neuromuscular physiology and acquired and congenital abnormalities of eye movements. Dr. Stambaugh is being honored for his years of dedication and leadership in the field of ophthalmology, AAO announced.
Mr. McManus, executive director of the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research in Washington, D.C., is being honored for dedicating his career to the support of vision research, AAO noted. Dr. Jones is receiving his award for his innovative and scholarly research in the field of corneal and external disease, for motivating young ophthalmologists and his worldwide training of ophthalmologists. Dr. Brown, founder of Surgical Eye Expeditions International, is credited with motivating ophthalmologists to transform the lives of blind and economically disadvantaged individuals throughout the developing world.
In addition, AAO will spotlight a session on pseudophakic IOLs during its annual meeting. The theme of the session will focus on the evolution of IOLs and where the future may take the technology. There will be 34 leading cataract and refractive surgeons on the agenda for this session, according to a press release.
