AAO names Board of Trustees candidates

SAN FRANCISCO — The American Academy of Ophthalmology announced nominations for election to its board of trustees in 2003. The nominees are Susan Day, MD, for president elect; Thomas Liesegang, MD, for senior secretary for clinical education; Barrett Haik, MD, and Stephanie Marioneaux, MD, for trustee at large; Malcom Mazow, MD, for chair of the council; and John Stechschulte, MD, for vice chair of the council.

Dr. Day is currently chairwoman and program director for the department of ophthalmology at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, as well as a pediatric ophthalmologist in private practice. She previously served on the AAO’s board of trustees from 1998 to 2001 and was chairwoman of the ethics committee from 1996 to 2000.

Dr. Liesegang has taught and published extensively in the areas of corneal and external diseases. He is affiliated with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and Jacksonville, Fla.

Dr. Haik is the Hamilton Professor and Chairman at the University of Tennessee Heath Science Center in Memphis. He is an expert in the diagnosis and management of ophthalmic tumors.

Dr. Marioneaux, an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, specializes in corneal and external disease in private practice.

Dr. Mazow is affiliated with the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and is a senior pediatric ophthalmologist at Houston Eye Associates.

Dr. Stechschulte is director of corneal surgery at the Eye Surgery Center of Ohio and has lectured in the fields of refractive and corneal transplant surgery.

Should the nominees be elected, terms will begin Jan. 1, 2004, the AAO announced in a press release.
