WASHINGTON — Federal and state affairs will be discussed at a number of sessions at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in Chicago. The AAO announced its schedule for governmental affairs events in a press release last week.

A forum on the AAO’s Surgery by Surgeons effort will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., during the first general session of the AAO Council meeting. The forum, featuring Oklahoma State Rep. Fred Morgan as a guest speaker, will be open to all members and will address ophthalmic issues on the state level.

Also on Sunday, representatives from the Food and Drug Administration will participate in a symposium from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. to provide an overview of device and drug regulations, as well as a review of the application and review processes for approval.

A symposium on children's vision, subtitled Politics and Money in Children's Eye Care, will be held from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 17. New data on screening and nationwide initiatives will be a focus of discussion.

Another symposium, What's New at the VA: Exciting Opportunities for Ophthalmologists, will be held Monday from 12:45 to 2:15. Pay levels for new physicians, research opportunities and other developments in the Veterans Health Administration will be discussed.
