AAO, ASCRS object to surgery decision by Oklahoma OD board

Physician associations in ophthalmology and general medicine are urging Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry to reject a decision by the Oklahoma Board of Optometry to allow optometrists to perform eye and eyelid surgery with a scalpel.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and other medical groups are objecting to the ruling by the Oklahoma OD board. The ruling will allow optometrists to use a scalpel to cut the eyelid or the eye surface to remove cancer lesions, to inject medication into the eye and to inject Botox around the eyes, according to a press release from ASCRS.

Gov. Henry has 45 days to either approve or disapprove the rule, according to the ASCRS press release.
