AAO announces new award, highest honor

SAN FRANCISCO — The American Academy of Ophthalmology has announced the honorees for its newest award, which is also its highest honor. The inaugural recipients of the Laureate Award, to be honored during this year’s annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif., are Charles Kelman, MD, Robert Machemer, MD, and Charles Schepens, MD.

The awards will be presented during the opening session of the annual conference, the group announced in a press release.

The Laureate Award was created to recognize individuals who have made the most significant contributions to the science of ophthalmology, according to the release. The award can be bestowed upon ophthalmologists who developed new techniques now accepted worldwide, made a seminal invention or adapted a previous technology, introduced a new treatment regimen, discovered the origin of a disease or established new standards of quality care in ophthalmology.
