In a West African population, the application of 5-fluouracil during trabeculectomy improved the probability of maintaining an intraocular pressure of 14 mm Hg or less, according to a British study.

C. Mielke and other colleagues in England reviewed the records of 154 eyes of 101 patients who underwent primary trabeculectomy in Lagos, Nigeria. Average follow-up was 17 months.

The probability of maintaining an IOP of 20 mm Hg or less at 18 months was 76% in those who received applications of 5-FU and 79% in a control group that received no adjunctive antimetabolite. The probability of maintaining an IOP of 14 mm Hg or less was significantly greater in the 5-FU group (64%) than in the control group (39%). Complication rates and visual acuity loss in the two groups was comparable.

The study is published in the October issue of Eye.
