HOVE, United Kingdom — Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited named Dr. Uday Batt the first recipient of the Ian Collins Rayner UKISCRS Fellowship, according to a press release from the company.

The United Kingdom and Ireland Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS) funded the annual fellowship, which will support in-training ophthalmologists who plan to conduct research in cataract and intraocular lens surgery.

Funds will be allotted for 1 year, but fellows can request a renewal for up to 3 years in order to complete a higher degree, the release said.

The award is named after Ian Collins, managing director and former chairman of Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, who passed away in 2010 following a long illness, according to the release.

“Supporting dedicated ophthalmologists in training is an investment for the future of ophthalmology,” Donald John Munro, Rayner’s chairman and managing director, said in the release. “Ian Collins loved the innovation side of IOLs, and research and training was close to his heart.”

This year’s fellowship was announced during the annual UKISCRS meeting in Brighton.
