SLACK Incorporated, publisher of Ocular Surgery News, has announced it will hold its first OSN Europe Eye Congress on the Greek island of Crete June 20-22, 2004. The meeting will be held at the Capsis Beach Hotel & Sofitel Capsis Palace and Convention Centre.

The meeting aims to present cutting edge technology and techniques in cataract surgery, refractive surgery, glaucoma and retina.

According to Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, co-course director of the meeting and Global Chief Medical Editor of Ocular Surgery News, the meeting will be “focused on the most current techniques and technologies used in treating the diseases most commonly encountered by the comprehensive ophthalmologist. The faculty is superb.”

Ioannis G. Pallikaris, MD, Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition Editorial Board Member, and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Crete, who will also serve as course director of the meeting, noted that Crete is an ideal location for a Pan-European meeting such as this one. “From a scientific point of view, it makes perfect sense to have the meeting here,” Dr. Pallikaris said, citing Crete’s reputation for being on the cutting edge of ophthalmic innovation.

Faculty

The chairperson of the cataract section will be Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition Medical Editor, Marc Weiser, MD, from Paris. Michael C. Knorz, MD, Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition Medical Editor, from Mannheim, Germany, will chair the refractive surgery section. The glaucoma section will be led by International Glaucoma Society co-President and Founder and Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Editorial Board Member, Shlomo S. Melamed, MD, of Tel Hashomer, Israel. Constantin Pournaras, MD, of Geneva, Switzerland, the most recent addition to the Ocular Surgery News Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition Editorial Board, will lead the retina section.

Format

The format of the congress will follow that of SLACK Incorporated’s highly successful Royal Hawaiian Eye Meeting. Sessions are planned to run from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day and will cover the subspecialties of cataract, refractive, glaucoma and retina.

Location

Crete, located in the southernmost district in the European community at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, was selected for its moderate climate and natural beauty. With its high mountains surrounded by fertile plateaus, its location on the Southern Aegean Sea, and its wealth of history dating back to Neolithic times, Crete provides an intriguing and scenic backdrop for the meeting.

“Crete is a unique island in the Mediterranean area and a perfect place for a meeting of this kind,” Dr. Pallikaris said. “I have been running a meeting here every year for the last 15 years with great success, so we will be able to organize a great time for everyone who comes here.”

“The location is fantastic and spouses and family may enjoy attending as well,” Dr. Lindstrom added.
