The upcoming European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting in Stockholm will cover a substantial number of important topics.

This year, the clinical research symposia will address issues beyond the normal scope of cataract and refractive surgeons. Quality of vision after multifocal IOL implantation, wound healing after glaucoma surgery and an update on drug delivery systems using the anterior part of the eye and anterior segment imaging and biometry will be covered alternatively on Sept. 8.

The main symposia will cover different aspects. The endothelium and the new surgical and medical concepts that are emerging around this important topic will be covered Sept. 9. Prevention of endothelial cell damage, endothelial transplantation and genetic engineering of the endothelium will be part of this important symposium.

The current state of phakic IOLs will be covered Sept. 11, providing a full review and update on this continuously interesting topic. The surgical reconstruction of the traumatized eye, an important topic not well-covered in recent meetings but important for cataract and refractive surgeons, will be covered Sept. 12. An overview of the main issues in cataract surgery, such as pediatric cases, new energies and endophthalmitis prevention, will be covered in a special session Sept. 10.

The meeting will include more than 90 courses that involve many interesting aspects for the cataract and refractive surgeon, including allied areas such as medical retina and oculoplasty. The Binkhorst Medal Lecture will be conducted by this year’s awardee, Ulf Steveni, MD, with the lecture, “Unpredicted Outcomes: Is Anything Worse Than Endophthalmitis?” Again, the ESCRS wants to provide special attention to the relevance of complications and, specifically, endophthalmitis, an area in which the society has made a great effort in supplying the cataract surgeon with effective, practical methods to prevent endophthalmitis following the guidelines that were created by the ESCRS Endophthalmitis Study.

The meeting is expected to be attended by more than 4,500 European cataract and refractive surgeons. The beauty and magic of Stockholm and the science of the meeting itself will constitute magnetic attractions for everybody interested in the recent evolution of cataract and refractive surgery not only in Europe but also worldwide.
