Governor Bobby Jindal has signed legislation banning minors under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices, according to a press release from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Louisiana is the ninth state to institute such a ban, according to the release. The law will go into effect on August 1.

“The AADA applauds Louisiana for taking this significant step in protecting its youth from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and non-melanoma skin cancers,” board-certified dermatologist and AADA president, Brett M. Coldiron, MD, FAAD, said in the release. “Prevention is the key to reducing this alarming trend in melanoma incidence rates, and we need to continue to educate the public about the risks of indoor tanning and encourage healthy decisions to help prevent skin cancer.”

Support for the ban was provided by the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AADA), AIM at Melanoma, the American Cancer Society – Cancer Action Network, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association, the Dermatology Interest Group, Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians and many others.
