Arthrosurface Inc. received FDA clearance for its ToeMotion Total Toe Restoration System.

The system consists of a metatarsal-based HemiCAP implant and a inlay metal baseplate with a poly insert for the phalangeal side of the joint. According to a company press release, the ToeMotion system provides fixation, while the inlay implants preserve bone and avoids resection of the intrinsic tissues that provide stability to the toe through implantation by milling instead of using saw cuts.

“Our platform technology for rock-solid immediate fixation and inlay arthroplasty has been proven to work on many different joints,” Steve Ek, chief executive officer and co-founder of Arthrosurface, stated in the release. “What is exciting is how well suited inlay arthroplasty is for the extremity joints. These joints are inherently smaller, mobile and traditionally have not done well with larger more invasive implants that require a lot of bone removal. Smaller implants that restore anatomy and take away little bone is the wave of the future.”

Elk stated in the release that Arthrosurface is targeting to launch another five extremity products along with the new ToeMotion system over the next several years.
