The Parkinson’s Foundation has announced $1.1 million in funding for the Institutional Movement Disorder Fellowship Program and the Nurse Practitioner Fellowship in Movement Disorders.
According to a foundation release, the 2022 fellowship recipients will receive Parkinson’s disease expert training, first-hand experience and funding for individual research projects to improve the lives of those with PD.
“Physicians and nurses are vital players in improving care for people with Parkinson’s, and these fellowship programs continue our longstanding commitment of bolstering care teams,” John L. Lehr, president and CEO of the Parkinson’s Foundation, said in the release. “We are thrilled to launch the Nurse Practitioner Fellowship in Movement Disorders as the first program of its kind globally, further extending the Foundation’s international impact.”
The Institutional Movement Disorder fellowship will train neurologists to become experts in PD care and support research directly affecting the understanding of PD and its treatments, the release stated. Four 2022 fellowship recipients will be awarded up to $207,000 for the two-year program.
The yearlong, nurse practitioner fellowship will provide advanced subspecialty education by emphasizing clinical trials, deep brain stimulation and varied interdisciplinary resources. Three nurse practitioners will receive up to $118,000 as 2022 awardees.
