The American Academy of Neurology has issued a statement in support of protections surrounding the physician-patient relationship, following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

In a letter to AAN members, President Orly Avitzur, MD, MBA, FAAN, stated that AAN leadership is “closely tracking and discussing the impact” of the decision and how it may affect patient-centered neurological care.

According to the letter, the AAN recently joined 46 other medical societies in signing on to and supporting a policy statement, “Opposing Government Interference in the Patient-Physician Relationship,” which was created by the Council for Medical Specialty Societies. The statement represents more than 800,000 physicians throughout the United States.

“Please be assured the AAN will continue to support all protections surrounding the physician-patient relationship, and we will keep our 38,000 members updated as our efforts to support these protections advance,” Avitzur wrote.
