The 69-page draft report is currently open for public comment on the AAN website, with a deadline of July 22, and includes several new practice recommendations to optimize health outcomes for women with epilepsy of childbearing potential and their future offspring.

These recommendations address areas such as joint doctor-patient decision-making; minimizing convulsive seizures; changing medication during pregnancy and continuous monitoring; medication choice, dosing and counseling; risks of pregnancy in these patients; fetal screening; folic acid supplementation; and screening of offspring. The risks associated with the use of valproic acid are discussed extensively.
