Switzerland-based Debiotech SA and Singapore-based AWAK Technologies Pte Ltd. have partnered to develop and manufacture a miniaturized home hemodialysis machine.  This new system will be based on Debiotech's miniaturized peritoneal dialysis equipment "DialEase," and AWAK's novel sorbent technology for fluid purification. "The combination of both companies' product expertise will lead to a new system which shall be extremely small and convenient to use, less intrusive in a patient's life and more cost effective," the companies said in a release. The new system will require less fluid than conventional hemodialysis machines and will be monitored in real time from the hospital via the cloud.

A new testing method can better detect potentially fatal parathyroid hormone imbalances in patients with end-stage renal disease, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Baxter International Inc. said that its board of directors has elected Todd S. Young as treasurer and a corporate officer of the company.Young will succeed James K. Saccaro, who has assumed a senior leadership role within the company's medical products commercial organization.

Baxter International Inc. has completed the acquisition of Gambro AB for $3.9 billion. Gambro, a privately-held Swedish company that focuses on developing, manufacturing and supplying dialysis products and therapies for patients with acute or chronic kidney disease and has annual sales of about $1.6 billion. The acquisition is expected to significantly increase the dialysis business for Baxter, whose kidney treatments currently focus on peritoneal dialysis.

As a home dialysis patient, I visit my clinic every month to see my nephrologist and care team. I had such a visit last week and before I left, my social worker came to see me. After we talked, she put a letter in front of me and asked me if I would sign it.

Non-profit dialysis provider Satellite Healthcare  has opened two new dialysis centers in Daly City, Calif. that will serve in-center dialysis and home dialysis patients. The openings will be celebrated with an open house on Aug. 27th.
