7 days a week dialysis service positively impacts patient compliance, hospitalization and survival
New findings demonstrating positive outcomes related to seven days a week dialysis services were presented Nov. 4 at the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney Week 2017 in New Orleans. The research was conducted by a group of nephrologists from Centro Brasiliense de Nefrologia & Dialise (CBN&D), Brazil.

Study: First infection-related hospitalization leads to recurrent infections in HHD patients
New Orleans - Daily home hemodialysis patients with a fistula had a higher risk of a first infection-related hospitalization (IH) than in-center hemodialysis patients with a fistula, according to an abstract presented by Eric D. Weinhandl, PhD, and Allan J. Collins, MD, from NxStage Medical Inc., at the American Society of Nephrology's Kidney Week 2017.

Baxter to study expanded hemodialysis in US
Baxter International Inc. said it has enrolled the first patients in two new clinical trials for its dialyzer Theranova. The dialyzer is designed to enable expanded dialysis (HDx) and remove large molecular weight toxins in dialysis patients. It’s currently available in Europe, select markets in Latin America, the Middle East and Far East, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. In Colombia, Baxter initiated a second large multi-center, prospective, observational trial designed to understand the impact of removing large uremic toxins on survival and hospitalization for end-stage renal disease patients.
Baxter developing system to generate peritoneal dialysis solution
Baxter International Inc. is developing a peritoneal dialysis solution generation system that would produce sterile PD solutions in patients' homes. The company said it has received guidance from the the U.S. Food and Drug Administration clarifying the regulatory pathway for the system, which would use a small water filtration device and would be integrated with the Amia PD system.

CHRONIC Care bill would expand telehealth options for home dialysis patients
On April 6, Senate Finance Committee Chair Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, introduced the CHRONIC Care Act of 2017, S. 870. The bill is an updated version of legislation Hatch introduced in December 2016 and includes a section that would expand the ability of Medicare beneficiaries on home dialysis to receive required monthly clinical assessments using telehealth, beginning in 2019.
Frank Gotch, father of kinetic modeling, dies at 91
Pioneering nephrologist Frank A. Gotch, who used kinetic modeling to formulize the Kt/V measure for dialysis, died Feb. 28. He was 91.
