Dialysis machines designed specifically for children are needed to prevent adverse effects
DALLAS — After an infant developed cyanosis and bradycardia during hemodialysis, researchers concluded that currently available dialysis machines may not be well-suited for small children and may result in unintended adverse effects, according to a case study presented at the Annual Dialysis Conference.

VIDEO: Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate seen as efficacious, safe for treatment of hyperkalemia
SAN DIEGO — In this exclusive video from ASN Kidney Week 2018, Ian Sabir, June Zhao, MD, PhD and Ayman Al-Shurbaji, MD, PhD, discuss a phase III study that compared 5 g and 10 g of Lokelma (sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, AstraZeneca) with placebo for the treatment of hyperkalemia.
Study finds additional doses of oxycodone are not needed in patients with ESRD
Investigators found oxycodone is removed during hemodialysis. However, not enough is removed to require additional dosing in patients with ESRD. According to findings published in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, the pharmacokinetics of oxycodone and the absence of unconjugated active metabolites demonstrate oxycodone can be used at the usual dosage.
Study assesses impact of inflammation, malnutrition on survival of patients with ESRD
When presented together, malnutrition, fluid overload and resulting inflammation can have a detrimental effect on survival among patients with ESRD, according to a study by researchers from the Netherlands and the United States. However, malnutrition as a singular risk factor “was not associated with increased mortality risk,” the study authors noted. “The highest mortality risk was observed in patients where all three risk factors were present.”
Study finds 24-hour urine phosphorus is unrelated to dietary phosphorus intake in patients with CKD
Among patients with moderate CKD on a tightly controlled dietary intake, 24-hour urine phosphorus was highly variable and unrelated to dietary phosphorus intake or absorption and was inversely related to phosphorus retention, according to research that appears in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
Apixaban may be safer than warfarin in AF, end-stage renal disease
Among patients with atrial fibrillation and dialysis-dependent end-stage renal disease, apixaban was associated with lower risk for bleeding than warfarin, researchers reported.
Circumcision in infants with hydronephrosis tied to lower UTI risk
Infant boys with hydronephrosis who received newborn circumcision had a significantly decreased risk of urinary tract infections, according to recently published research in Pediatrics.
Study details efficacy of coaching to increase water intake on kidney function among patients with CKD
Coaching adults with chronic kidney disease to increase water intake did not significantly slow the decline in kidney function at 1-year follow-up, according to a randomized clinical trial that will appear in JAMA.
Study analyzes association between fluid overload and interdialytic weight gain
Pre-dialysis and post-dialysis fluid overload were associated with increasing patient age, a lower BMI and multiple comorbidities and strongly predicted all-cause mortality, according to a study published in Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation. The findings question long-held thoughts that higher interdialytic weight gain is worse for outcomes and needs to be expanded.
