Study finds AKI independently associated with increased risk of CV events
According to a study in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, acute kidney injury in hospitalized adults was independently linked with a greater risk of CV events, especially heart failure, 1 year after hospital discharge.
Findings link early postoperative acetaminophen exposure with lower AKI rate in pediatric patients
Among pediatric patients who undergo cardiac surgery, early postoperative acetaminophen exposure may be associated with a lower rate of acute kidney injury, according a study published in JAMA Pediatrics. Further analysis of these findings could establish acetaminophen as a preventative agent for acute kidney injury.

Findings link AKI with greater rehospitalization rates among children
According to a study published in the Clinical Journals of the American Society of Nephrology, acute kidney injury was associated with greater rates of hospitalization and physician visits after discharge from a pediatric intensive care unit.
United Healthcare and American Renal Associates are in court over out-of-network fees
National health insurer United Healthcare has filed a lawsuit against dialysis provider American Renal Associates, claiming that the company offered joint venture agreements to lure nephrologists out of United Healthcare’s network so that American Renal Associates could then bill United higher rates for dialysis care.
Study analyzes strategies to prevent AKI, dialysis-required AKI in patients with HIV
LAS VEGAS — Acute kidney injury is a common complication of hospitalized patients with HIV and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. According to a poster presented at the American Nephrology Nurses Association National Symposium, it is important for nurses to think critically when providing care to these patients to minimize the risk of acute kidney injury and prevent complications linked with dialysis-requiring acute kidney injury.
Iclaprim safe, potentially cost-effective for ABSSSIs
Motif Bio announced additional safety data from its REVIVE-2 trial of the investigational antibiotic iclaprim, showing that the treatment was well-tolerated in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections, or ABSSSIs. Other findings, presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, showed that the drug could reduce the cost burden of acute kidney injury normally associated with vancomycin, which is currently the standard of care.
Study finds incidence and predictors of multiple vancomycin-associated AKI
AUSTIN, Texas — A study presented at the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings showed data suggesting patients who had been treated with vancomycin and had acute kidney injury were at an elevated risk of subsequent acute kidney injury when re-treated with vancomycin.
Managing adverse events associated with targeted therapies used to treat metastatic renal cell carcinoma
The introduction of targeted therapies in the management of metastatic renal cell carcinoma has markedly increased the treatment options available for these patients. These agents are now used in the first-line and second-line treatment settings, and beyond, to improve patient outcomes. Although many of these agents were approved on the basis of an improvement in progression-free survival, a recent analysis of a real-world patient population found that the use of targeted therapy has led to improved survival as well.
VIDEO: Consider changing pharmacokinetics in the drug dosing of patients with acute kidney injury
AUSTIN, Texas — At the National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings, Mary Vilay, PharmD, spoke about drug dosing across the spectrum of acute kidney injury.
Colistin-associated AKI, attributable risk and time course
Colistin is typically associated with substantial excess acute kidney injury that is apparent within 72 hours of treatment; however, colistin’s toxicity varied according to baseline hemoglobin concentration, according to recent findings published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
