  • The Emergency Partnership Initiative addressed health care emergencies caused by hurricanes in 2017 through the COVID-19 crisis.
  • It is currently responding to dialysis needs after hurricanes in September.

SAN DIEGO — In this video exclusive from ASN Kidney Week, Jeffrey Silberzweig, MD, FACP, FASN, discusses the work the American Society of Nephrology’s Emergency Partnership Initiative is doing to respond to major health emergencies.

Silberzweig is chair of the initiative and co-chair of the Current and Emerging Threats Workgroup. He is the chief medical officer for the Rogosin Institute, professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and medical director of dialysis services at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell and Lower Manhattan Hospitals.

The initiative began in 2017 after hurricanes Irma and Maria struck the Caribbean and expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The group now collaborates with the government and various areas of nephrology to provide information to the kidney community and advocate for its needs during natural disasters and other health care situations.

The group is currently working to address to the supply needs of peritoneal dialysis providers and patients after the recent hurricanes in the southern U.S.
