Key takeaways:

  • Patients start by providing health data like CKD stage and eGFR in an online survey.
  • The tool uses cloud-based learning that branches into different paths based on user responses.

The National Kidney Foundation launched a new interactive portal that lets patients with chronic kidney disease learn more about their condition, according to a press release.

“Learning you have kidney disease is oftentimes frightening and frustrating because there is a lot of new information to parse through; those living with CKD need information that is understandable and actionable,” Kevin Longino, CEO of the NKF, said in the release. “NKF is committed to being a credible source of information for every person living with kidney disease, or a kidney transplant, so they can make informed decisions about their particular stage and type of kidney disease.”

NKF Patient Journey: Chronic Kidney Disease is an online platform that tailors education to each patient’s health status, offering information specific to their stage of kidney disease.

Patients start by providing health data like CKD stage, serum creatinine, eGFR and any comorbidities in an online survey, as well as goals for managing their condition. The tool uses cloud-based responsive learning that then branches into different paths based on user answers, incorporating text, graphics, videos and other visuals into accessible segments, according to the release. It also offers links to additional NKF learning resources.

The platform covers topics including CKD stages 1 through 5, dialysis, transplantation and comorbid conditions, such as prediabetes, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity.

“NKF Patient Journey: Chronic Kidney Disease was developed for adult learners because there are many obstacles to patient education that arise not only in primary care but also in specialty care settings,” Joseph Vassalotti, MD, FASN, chief medical officer of NKF, said in the release. “This innovative tool offers those living with CKD at varying levels of health literacy the individualized health information they need to navigate their kidney health journey. People living with kidney diseases want to know what kidney disease means and what can be done to improve kidney health on an individualized basis.”
