A task force report, released in 2020, outlined a race-free approach to estimate kidney function that included incorporating data from a more diverse patient population to remove race from kidney function estimates. With the updated algorithm, some Black patients received modified times on the kidney transplant waitlist, according to a press release.

The task force also recommended national efforts to increase timely use of cystatin C, particularly to confirm eGFR in adults at risk for or who have CKD.

The TIME100 Health List highlights the most influential contributors in health care in five categories: innovators, titans, pioneers, leaders and catalysts, the release noted.
