Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes has announced the release of its 2024 clinical practice guideline for the evaluation and management of chronic kidney disease.
The executive summary co-chaired by Adeera Levin, MD, of the University of British Columbia, and Paul Stevens, MB, of East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, will publish in the April 2024 issue of Kidney International, according to a press release.
The manual “comes during a transformative period in nephrology, offering new hope for people living with kidney disease,” Levin said in the release. “By integrating the latest evidence and expert consensus, we aim to empower health care professionals and patients with actionable recommendations to optimize outcomes and enhance quality of life.”
The guideline is an update to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) 2012 CKD recommendation. According to the release, the updated guidelines offer practical clinical advice based on formal evidence review and consensus practice points that can direct care in which systematic analysis is not available. Key points covered in the 2024 CKD Guideline include:
- CKD evaluation and classification;
- kidney disease risk assessment;
- disease-related complication management;
- medication management and drug stewardship; and
- strategies for delivering patient-centered care across diverse clinical settings.
The clinical practice guideline also updates guidance on eGFR and albuminuria measurements, utilization of CKD risk prediction equations, and treatment recommendations for kidney and cardiovascular risk reductions tailored to individual patient needs.
“There is a clear and increasing recognition of CKD as a global public health problem,” Stevens said in the release. “The inclusion of people with CKD in clinical trials has greatly improved, giving us an evidence base upon which to recommend care and treatments that had not previously existed. Increasingly sophisticated diagnostic tools and advances in technology make clear that we are witnessing a new era in nephrology.”
