Key takeaways:

  • Case management and informatics are becoming strong alternative opportunities for careers in nephrology nursing.
  • Clinical and advanced practice roles remain strong.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — In an interview from the American Nephrology Nurses Association National Symposium, Donna J. Bednarski, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, CNN, CNP, offers details on a session she chaired on career opportunities for nephrology nurses.

“We reviewed all the opportunities in kidney care, whether in the inpatient setting, outpatient setting, transitional care, home setting, even skilled facilities setting,” Bednarski, a nurse practitioner at the Harper University Hospital Dialysis Center in Detroit and who is on the health policy committee for the American Nephrology Nurses Association, told Healio. “Many are familiar with the clinical nurse setting and the advanced practice setting, but we also wanted to explore other opportunities – those that are in education and case management.”

Bednarski said there are strong career opportunities in informatics for nurses in nephrology. “It’s part of the analytical sciences – looking at data and what we can do with that data,” she said.
