Key takeaways:

  • ANNA will focus on four main goals for 2023 that will include nursing health and patient care.
  • Recruitment and highlighting the importance of mental health are top priorities.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — In this interview, incoming American Nephrology Nurses Association president Jennifer E. Payton, MHCA, BSN, RN, CNN, discusses four main goals she has created for her upcoming year in office.

“My number one goal for the upcoming year as ANNA president is to focus more on self-care,” Payton, director of regulatory compliance for the National Dialysis Accreditation Commission, told Healio at the ANNA National Symposium in Palm Springs, California. “Nurses are good at taking care of patients, but not so good at taking care of themselves.”

Payton’s second goal is to focus on the mental health of nephrology nurses. “Nurses need to know the signs of stress, fatigue, depression and burnout from the work that we do every day,” Payton told Healio.

Payton said her other goals as ANNA president include a focus on quality and on recruitment and retention of nurses in nephrology. “We have a shortage of nurses in all specialties around the country, but especially in nephrology,” she said.
