With May serving as Mental Health Awareness Month, Healio has collected the top stories in nephrology that discuss mental health, burnout and the mental burden kidney disease can have on patients and providers.
In a study that found more than half of young adults with kidney failure reported mental health issues, Mohammed Al-Talib, MBBS, from population health sciences at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom, told Healio, “We should be asking our young adult patients if they are having any difficulties with their mental health and signposting them to available services.”
Another top story reported on burnout in nephrology staff. “If you have increased burnout, that's going to lead to higher turnover. Higher turnover is going to increase your risk of staffing shortages,” Andrew W. Webb, DNP, FNP, from the University of Missouri Healthcare, said.
