Key takeaways:

  • Observational codes were removed from the 2023 CPT Evaluation and Management codes.
  • Inpatient coding is now based on level of decision-making or the amount of time spent in the service.

NEW ORLEANS — In this interview from the Renal Physicians Association Annual Meeting, Robert Blaser discusses the significance of the 2023 CPT Evaluation and Management changes.

The Renal Physicians Association (RPA) recently released a document summarizing ways the changes have impacted RPA membership.

“These are great changes,” Blaser, director of public policy for RPA, said in the video.

In 2021, CMS based outpatient coding on the level of decision-making or the amount of time spent in the service. This was applied to the inpatient side of things, according to Blaser, through 2023 edits.

“The other big thing that they did was they got rid of the observation codes,” Blaser said.
