  • Physicians may experience pay cuts in the new 2023 payment models.
  • Prior authorization remains an unsolved problem.

NEW ORLEANS — In this interview from the Renal Physicians Association Annual Meeting, Robert Blaser discusses the potential challenges nephrologists may face in 2023.

“There’s one big issue, and that’s physician reimbursement,” Blaser, director of public policy for the RPA, said. He added, “Physicians are having a bit of an existential crisis right now in terms of getting paid because they’ve had to experience overall pay cuts for the last couple of years.”

Blaser said that some inputs from the Medicare Advantage Advance Notice could be used to determine future payments for the voluntary kidney payment models under the Comprehensive Kidney Care Contracting.

“The initial projection is that it will be a pay cut,” Blaser said.
