New chair, board members named to ASN Kidney Health Initiative

The American Society of Nephrology announced a new chair for its Kidney Health Initiative, as well as seven new members to the board to directors, according to a press release.

After serving on the Kidney Health Initiative (KHI) for 5 years, Uptal D. Patel, MD, has become its chair. Patel’s experience includes clinical fellowships in pediatric and adult nephrology and health services research training. Moreover, Patel was a tenured associate professor at Duke University, as well as the director of the clinical and translational core of the Duke O’Brien Center for Kidney Research and director of nephrology research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute.

In addition to his role as chair of KHI, Patel will continue teaching at Duke University and serve as the head of clinical renal and executive group director of early cardiovascular, renal and metabolism at AstraZeneca.

According to the release, those joining the board will be responsible for providing oversight on strategy for the KHI and will represent the “the diversity of the 90 organizations that are members of the largest biomedical consortium in the kidney community.”

New board members include Jorge Cerda, MD, MS, FASN, from Saint Peter’s Healthcare Partners, Manisha Dadhania, MBA, from Medtronic, Vanessa A. Evans, from Fresenius Medical Care, Amanda Grandinetti, MPH, a patient advocate, Bruce M. Robinson, MD, MS, FASN, from the University of Michigan, Glenda V. Roberts from the University of Washington, and Brigitte Schiller, MD, FASN, from Fresenius Medical Care and an Editorial Advisory Board Member for Healio/Nephrology News & Issues.

“Our new board members come from many corners of the kidney community, and they will add tremendous expertise, perspective, and passion to KHI’s ongoing commitment to advance innovation in a pre-competitive environment,” Patel said in the release. “I am grateful that they will be joining the board and look forward to working with each of them as we continue KHI’s efforts to improve kidney health together.”
