US Task Force releases drafted research plan for routine CKD screening

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released a drafted research plan for routine chronic kidney disease screening that will be online and open to public comments until Feb. 15, according to a press release.
The plan includes a proposed analytic framework, key and contextual questions, an approach to assessing health equity and variation in evidence across populations and a research approach. As Healio previously reported, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) added screening for CKD to its list of preventive services under active consideration in 2022, but did not share a timeline for the process.
In an American Society of Nephrology press release, the organization announced being “encouraged” by the drafted plan.
“Early screening to drive faster more comprehensive intervention are critical components of a holistic prevention strategy for kidney diseases,” Michelle A. Josephson, MD, FASN, president of ASN, said in the release. “We fully support USPSTF and their efforts to advance the research agenda on this critical public health priority.”
This plan follows a call from several kidney organizations, including the American Kidney Fund, to develop a CKD screening recommendation.
Josephson added, “The entire kidney community has contributed to this decades-long effort and ASN is committed to continuing our work with other advocates, including the Coalition 4 Kidney Health, and the USPSTF to prioritize screening for kidney diseases as USPSTF finalizes its draft research plan.”
