Patients who underwent home hemodialysis failure had a greater risk of mortality than those who continued home dialysis.

“We found that the risk of death is high after the transition, and it remains high after 3 months. We could not discern the cause of this association, but we suspect it is due to the events that caused patients to stop home hemodialysis,” David J. Semple, PhD, from the department of renal medicine of the Auckland District Health Board and a faculty member of medical and health sciences at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and colleagues wrote. “The group of patients who stopped home hemodialysis only for a period of time did not have an elevated rate of death. We suspect this is because they did not transiently stop home hemodialysis due to serious illness.”

It was the top story in home dialysis in 2022.

Another top story reported on a presentation at ASN Kidney Week, in which data showed fellows should complete at least 10 home dialysis clinic trainings before providing peritoneal dialysis without supervision.

“We are not providing the fellowship training that we ought to provide,” Yuvaram N. Reddy, MBBS, MPH, FASN, of University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, told Healio. “That is a gap to home dialysis use. We think that increasing the amount of training for fellows would be a great first step in building a pipeline of home dialysis leaders.”
