The Arbor Research Collaborative for Health has named Roberto Pecoits-Filho, MD, PHD, FACP, FASN, as the new scientific and clinical leader for the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study.

The research organization has tracked more than 70,000 patients from more than 20 countries since 1996, according to a press release, and has “improved the patient experience of individuals with kidney disease by identifying links between international variations in clinical practices and outcomes and identifying best practices for treating patients.”

Pecoits-Filho, a professor of nephrology at the school of medicine at Catholic University of Paraná State in Brazil, served as principal investigator for one of three Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) studies since joining Arbor Research 4 years ago, according to the release.

“It helps us to stand on the shoulders of giants like Fritz Port and Bruce Robinson, as well as Ron Pisoni, who continues to be a leader and ambassador for DOPPS,” Pecoits-Filho said. “I am thrilled to collaborate with our talented team of researchers, clinicians, data scientists and our project team to continue our 26-year legacy of developing innovative studies to improve the lives of patients with kidney disease.”

Robinson, who has been the scientific and clinical leader of DOPPS for the past 15 years, is joining the faculty of the University of Michigan. “My work with DOPPS and Arbor Research will always be a highlight of my career,” Robinson said. “I can’t speak enough about the privilege it’s been to support improving care for patients through the DOPPS program.”

DOPPS investigators have launched special studies tracking trends in kidney care, including PDOPPS, a focus on the use of peritoneal dialysis, and CKDOPPS, a focus on patients with chronic kidney disease not on dialysis.
